Hawkins/McGee Memorial Softball Tournament Recap

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – SWOSU Softball opened the 2024 season with an even 2-2 mark at the Hawkins/McGee Memorial Tournament held at Majestic Park in Arkansas. The Bulldogs picked up wins over Northeastern State and Northwest Missouri, but fell to Missouri Southern and Missouri S&T.

SWOSU's 2-2 record reflects the best start to a season in a decade, matching the 2014 mark through four games. Jadyn Hook and Skyla McPhillips combined for 11 hits in the tournament to lead the offense. Pitcher Blaire Gentry picked up a pair of wins in the circle in 13.2 innings of work and also delivered what proved to be the game-winning blast on Friday against NSU.

The Dawgs will rest up and prepare to travel to Texas for another early season tournament next Friday-Sunday. The five game, three-day event will be hosted by Midwestern State in Wichita Falls.

MSSU 9, SWOSU 1 (6 inn.)
Feb. 2 || 2:00 pm

SWOSU's season opener came against a Missouri Southern squad who received votes in the NFCA's preseason top-25 poll.  A six-run fourth inning by the Lions broke things open and MSSU was able to put the game in run-rule territory with their single run in the sixth.

The first score of the game belonged to SWOSU in the first inning. A fielder's choice got Chesnie Hewitt on and a wild pitch scored her from third for a 1-0 Bulldog advantage.

MSSU scored a run in each of the next two innings, giving themselves the lead, before pouring it on in the top of the fourth. All nine batters saw the plate for the Lions in that extended fourth. Five straight batters posted RBIs and Missouri Southern extended the lead to 8-1. A bases loaded walk in the top of the sixth brought in the final score of the day, making the margin eight runs – enough for the run rule.

SWOSU 1, NSU 0
Feb. 2 || 4:30 pm

Game two of the day was a defensive battle. The only offense of the game, ironically, came from pitcher Blaire Gentry. She blasted a home run to center field as the first batter in the second inning which proved to be the game-winning run. SWOSU threatened to put up more runs as they had the bases loaded with one out but struck out twice to end the side.

For the next 5 innings, the two pitchers went to work. Neither team had multiple runners on simultaneously and no runners made it further than second base.

Gentry claimed the first win in the circle for the Dawgs with a complete game shutout. She allowed five hits and struck one batter out in a complete game. After three errors in the opening game, the SWOSU defense tightened up and committed none.

SWOSU 8, NWMSU 3
Feb. 3 || 12:00 pm

The Bulldogs entered the seventh (and final) inning trailing 3-2 before exploding for six runs to secure another win. Chesnie Hewitt didn't allow too much drama to unfold by tying the game up with a home run in the first at-bat of the final inning. With things knotted at 3-3 and eventually two outs, Skyla McPhillips delivered a bases-clearing triple to plate three runs and put the Dawgs up 6-3. Maddie Rahon doubled in another pair of runs two batters later which all but sealed things.

Gentry, who replaced Courtney Hill who started in the circle, earned her second win in as many days with 4.0 innings of scoreless relief. Hill pitched the first three innings, striking out four.

McPhillips ended the game 3-for-4 with a run scored. SWOSU had a season high 14 hits in the contest.

Missouri S&T 9, SWOSU 8
Feb. 3 || 2:30 pm

In a wild tournament finale where both teams battled rainy conditions, the Bulldogs used four runs in the top half of the seventh inning to tie a once 8-4 deficit up before getting walked off on in Missouri S&T's home half. SWOSU's go-ahead run in the top of the seventh was stranded just 60 feet away with another behind her on second.

S&T singled twice to start their half of the seventh which put immediate pressure on the Dawgs. The defense stayed firm, collecting two outs which included an out at home, but eventually walked in the winning run.

Jadyn Hook led the offense with a 3-for-4 showing, doubling twice and driving in two while scoring two. 10 walks by four SWOSU pitchers did not help the cause.
