PIEDMONT, Okla. – SWOSU Softball gave No. 8-ranked Rogers State all they could handle but fell 2-1 after a seventh inning walk off.
It was a pitcher's duel on Friday between both starting arms. SWOSU's Blaire Gentry allowed two runs, both unearned, and threw the entire game. She struck out three, walked two, but most importantly had the Hillcat offense on their heels for much of the game by working both sides of the plate.
Offensively, the Bulldogs outhit RSU on the scoreboard 7-5 but could not translate that to enough runs. Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, SWOSU tied things up and had a chance to take the lead before stranding two in scoring position.
The Hillcats broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth after a two-out single plated home a runner who reached on an error. The hit went to right field and SWOSU had a play at first to try to prevent the hit and end the inning. It was bang-bang, but the call went in favor of Rogers State and the go-ahead run scored.
Trailing 1-0 in the seventh, Jordan Wadley pinch hit and came through with a single up the middle to get momentum rolling. Skyla McPhillips singled right after her before Rebeca Fajardo, with two outs, drove in a pinch running Cierah Jones to tie the game.
In the final frame, a leadoff double by Rogers State proved costly. After Gentry struck out the next batter, a bloop single that was then bobbled allowed RSU's runner from second to keep running home and win the game.
McPhillips finished 2-3 for her third multi-hit game of the young season. Five other Bulldogs had singles to make up SWOSU's hit production.
SWOSU is set to play two more on Saturday at the Raising Cane's Softball Festival. They'll take on Nebraska-Kearney at 1pm and Northeastern State at 6pm - both in Edmond at UCO's field.
