Lady Bulldogs Surge Back to Stun East Central

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU Women's Basketball turned up the defensive pressure and paired it with improved shooting numbers in the second half of Monday's matchup with East Central in a 62-60 come-from-behind win. The Lady Bulldogs evaporated a 15-point halftime deficit, capped off by an Averi Zinn go-ahead layup in the closing seconds to earn the first win in conference play.

After scoring just 21 points through the first 20 minutes, SWOSU nearly doubled that output with 41 points after the break on 44% shooting. They paired it with 15 second half turnovers they cashed into 17 points in the comeback effort.

The Lady Dawgs trailed 54-44 with a little over six minutes to play in the game before they made one final successful push at the Tigers. A 12-2 run from there, highlighted by back-to-back three balls by Chloe Cantrell and Layni Zinn had the game knotted at 56-56 with 2:07 to play.

ECU regained a two-possession lead with 58 seconds remaining before SWOSU closed the game on a 6-0 run that included a Mason Jones three ball and Averi's game winner with 18 seconds to play. The Lady Bulldogs got one final stop on defense and added a free throw late to seal it.

Jones finished with a season high 17 points and connected on three three-pointers for the first time this year. She added five rebounds.

Three others ended in double figures, Cantrell (11), Averi Zinn (10), and Hailey Grant (10). Zinn grabbed six rebounds; Grant had a career high five assists.

The defense forced 22 turnovers in total, while the offense only committed 13.

The win snaps a four-game losing streak and pushes SWOSU's record to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in GAC play. They'll be back home Thursday, December 19 to play host to Oklahoma Baptist in the usual 5:30 pm time slot.
