WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Senior guard Averi Zinn beat the buzzer on Thursday night, defeating Oklahoma Baptist 62-60 to conclude a perfect 2-0 week inside the Pioneer Event Center.
SWOSU trailed 60-54 with 1:33 left to play before closing the game on an 8-0 run to complete the comeback. Mason Jones knocked down a three-point shot with 41 seconds remaining to tie the game up, immediately paired with a big stop on defense that allowed for the Lady Bulldogs to take the last shot.
With just under 15 seconds to play, SWOSU got the ball inbounds to Zinn who did the rest. She used a screen to get downhill towards the basket, stopped and pivoted, and got her layup away with time to spare to give SWOSU the victory.
The Lady Bulldogs faced multiple six-point deficits in the final quarter – matching the largest deficit by either team in a tightly contested matchup throughout that featured 13 lead changed and 11 ties.
After shooting just 7-of-34 from the field in the first half, SWOSU came alive by finishing the game 14-for-29 (48%) in the final two quarters. They finished 34% for the game. Despite the cold start, SWOSU's defense kept things close by limiting the Bison to 29% in the first half with nine forced turnovers. The Bison were turned over 18 times in total on the night and finished right at 40% shooting from the field.
SWOSU led 13-9 after the first quarter, before trailing by one point at halftime, 21-20, and at the end of the third quarter, 39-38.
Hailey Grant led all scorers and rebounders with 16 points and eight rebounds. She added a career high five blocks in the effort. Layni Zinn and Libbi Zinn both had 10 points apiece. Averi was 1-of-9 from the field in the game before her game winner. She had six points and a team high four assists on the night.
The Lady Dawgs nearly matched the Bison in rebounding (35-34) and grabbed 12 offensive rebounds that allowed them to achieve a difference making edge in second chance points, 13-8.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs end the month on a high note in conference with two straight league wins in response to an 0-3 start. SWOSU, now 6-4 overall and 2-3 in the GAC, will close out the semester with a non-conference road matchup against Missouri Southern on Saturday.
