Volleyball Sweeps Day Two in Wichita Falls

Bulldogs enjoy first 3-0 start in program history.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas – The SWOSU volleyball team claimed wins in both of Friday's matches at the Midwestern State Invitational. They came back from a 2-1 deficit to defeat Eastern New Mexico in a five-set thriller before taking care of Western Colorado 3-0 in the nightcap.

This is the first 3-0 start in SWOSU volleyball history dating back to 2005.

SWOSU will close out play in Wichita Falls and look to maintain its undefeated start to the season tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. against Central Oklahoma who is receiving votes in the national poll. The Bulldogs will be looking for the first win against the Bronchos in what will be the 15th all-time matchup. The two sides have not faced each other since 2017.

SWOSU vs Eastern New Mexico, 1:00 pm
W, 3-2 (22-25, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 15-9)

The Dawgs simply found a way to get the job done to edge ENMU in the day's first game. SWOSU hit just .089 as a team and overcame 38 attack errors in a match that required all five sets to determine a winner.

Both sides were evenly matched nearly the entire way. In a game filled with runs on both sides, SWOSU was forced to respond throughout. They fell behind 1-0, and again at 2-1 before a tight fourth set that proved to swing the momentum for good.

The Dawgs faced a pair of match points in set four but staved them off and eventually claimed a 27-25 win to force the decisive fifth set where they went on to control it handily and earn the win.

Samantha Kuzma finished with 10 kills and had her hand in five blocks. Maddie Clark led the team with 14 kills but did commit 10 errors. Lacy Mott added nine kills and a team high 17 digs. Cameron Turner turned in 30 assists and started the final three-point spurt in the fourth set with a sneaky kill from her setter position that fought off match point and allowed the action to continue. SWOSU then scored the next two points, and the rest is history.

SWOSU vs Western Colorado, 5:00 pm
W, 3-0 (25-16, 25-8, 25-18)

SWOSU cruised to a 3-0 win against Western Colorado thanks to a completely different story from the first game near the net. The Bulldogs hit .440 as a team and had four players hit above .400 for the game.

The first two sets saw little resistance to the SWOSU hitting attack. They committed no attacking errors in the first set, one in the second, and held a .545 hitting percentage going into the third. On the other side of the court, the Dawgs held Western Colorado to 24 points through the first two sets. The Mountaineers fought back in the third set and came within two points late, but SWOSU ended on a 6-1 run to finish the match.

Lacy Mott had a team high 19 kills and added 12 digs in the win. Jada Permenter provided 20 digs from her libero spot. Setters Cameron Turner and Terez Chavez combined for 31 assists.
