WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Soccer kicked off the season by hosting No. 16 Emporia State on Thursday afternoon, ending in a 1-1 draw.
The Bulldogs played the nationally ranked Hornets solidly the entire match. SWOSU held the advantage in shots, 15-13, and corner kicks, 2-0, while both teams put up five shots on goal.
Emporia State jumped ahead 1-0 with a score in the 31st minute. The goal came in a scrum around the net and the ball snuck behind goalkeeper
Terra Rybuck to allow the goal.
SWOSU got off seven shots in the first half, but only had three shots on goal.
The second half was a defensive battle for the first 15 minutes. Neither team could break through with a great shot off in the box, until the 63rd minute when
Hannah Guiterrez caught a breakaway ball deep in Emporia State territory. Off a goal kick, the ball sailed over midfield into Guiterrez's possession and she boomed a kick past the keeper into the left corner of the goal to tie the game at what would be the final score of 1-1.
SWOSU played stout defense on their half of the field. ESU held possession of the ball on their attacking half 69% of the game.
Micaella Swain led the Dawgs in shots with six and one on goal. It was the first career goal for Guiterrez.
A quick turnaround faces the Bulldogs, as they play No. 7 Dallas Baptist back at the SWOSU Athletic Complex on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
