WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball was back in action at the SWOSU Athletic Complex today against (RV) Southern Arkansas in a doubleheader. SAU took game one 16-7 and game two 8-6.
SWOSU gets another chance at Southern Arkansas tomorrow. The two teams play a single game that begins at 12:00 pm.
GAME ONE – (RV) SAU 16, SWOSU 7 (5 innings)
The Muleriders immediately jumped on SWOSU in the opening game of the series. They put up four runs in multiple ways to take the first lead of the game.
SWOSU did not go out quietly. The Bulldogs scored three runs off of a couple extra base hits from
Caitlin Delaney and
Skye Tilley in the bottom of the second to make it a one run deficit.
SAU came right back out the next frame with a ridiculous outburst. 16 at-bats saw 12 runs score, including a grand slam and a solo shot back to back. This scoring eruption put the Muleriders up 16-3 at that moment.
The eventual score was 16-7 after SWOSU scored two runs in the third and the fifth but four runs were not enough to prolong the game. It ended in a shorten five innings.
Brianna Cryer was on the hook for the loss after pitching 3.0 innings scattered across the game. The latter four runs for SWOSU were all scored by
Caitlin Delaney. She hit two two-run homers in the third and fifth innings. Delaney finished the game 3-3 with the two home runs, a double, and four RBIs.
GAME TWO – (RV) SAU 8, SWOSU 6
SAU scored runs in every inning except the fourth of game two. The Bulldogs stood tall the entire game, yet ultimately fell short. The difference was a two-run home run in the fifth to give SAU a 6-5 lead and all the momentum after SWOSU had a 5-4 lead.
Southern Arkansas started the scoring in the second game as well. A two out two-run shot to left center put them up 2-0 in the first frame.
SWOSU scored two in the first also but scored the complete opposite way. A walk, a single, and another single were how the Bulldog base runners reached. Some smart base running brought two home to tie the game.
SAU added two runs over the next two innings to stretch their lead to 4-2. A couple Mulerider mistakes allowed SWOSU to score one run in the third and extended the fourth inning that SWOSU eventually had two cross home. This 3-0 scoring run put SWOSU ahead 5-4 for their first lead of the day and seemed to have the Dawgs riding momentum into the late stages of the game.
Southern Arkansas grabbed that momentum right back with a two-run homer in the fifth to retake the lead. They would keep the lead the rest of the game.
SAU scores in the sixth and seventh made the biggest deficit of the game for SWOSU heading into the bottom of the seventh. A couple base hits offered SWOSU a little hope and scored one run, but the comeback was thwarted after just the one run.
Taryn Westbrook took the loss in a solid complete game effort.
Jordyn Wadley brought a strong bat this game. She ended 3-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored.
Dani Carmo batted an efficient 2-4 with an RBI as well.
