WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball split a nonconference doubleheader with Fort Hays State on Tuesday afternoon. Game one was taken by FHSU, 4-0.
Skyla McPhillips was the hero for SWOSU in game two after knocking a two-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the Bulldogs up by the eventual score of 4-2.
SWOSU gets back to GAC action this weekend as they host a three-game series with Southern Nazarene. It starts with a single game on Friday that is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
GAME ONE – FHSU 4, SWOSU 0
It was all Tigers in the first game. Fort Hays State got on the board first with one in the second. They extended the lead in the fourth with one run and the fifth with two extra runs.
Morgan Schmidt held the Bulldog lineup to no hits and only put one base runner on base the entire game.
Brianna Cryer was handed the decision loss in a complete game.
GAME TWO – SWOSU 4, FHSU 2
SWOSU flipped a switch during the between games break. They looked more confident and poised in the box compared to game one.
With two outs gone in the second inning, SWOSU struck first.
Maddie Rahon's single scored
Cierah Jones for the first run of the day.
Kaylee Barkley also singled to score Rahon. They put up two runs to take the lead.
The Tigers responded in the top of the third with a two RBI triple to tie things up at 2-2. SWOSU would hold Fort Hays State to only these two runs.
SWOSU had ample opportunities to open the game up, but failed to do so. Bulldog hitters loaded the bases in the first inning and the third inning, but left all six stranded. They left at least one runner stranded in all six innings.
This ultimately did not matter though, as with two outs in the bottom of the sixth, the Bulldogs rallied. A walk and a single put two runners on base for SWOSU.
Skyla McPhillips stepped up to the plate and blasted a double to the centerfield wall. Both runners scored, extending the SWOSU lead to two runs.
Taryn Westbrook secured the win in the top of the seventh in only four batters. She picked up the win in a complete game, striking out four Tiger batters in the process.
Skyla McPhillips finished 1-3 with the game winning double and two RBIs.
Maddie Rahon ended the game 1-2, including a run scored and an RBI as well.
