RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – SWOSU Softball closed out its series against Arkansas Tech on a high note, winning game three 6-1 behind good pitching and steady offense.
It's a strong way to end the series after the Bulldogs dropped both ends of Saturday's doubleheader with the Golden Suns to start the series. SWOSU has now picked up wins over a nationally-ranked Harding team and a strong 21-12 Arkansas Tech squad in back-to-back weekends.
The Bulldogs will now head back to Weatherford where the next two sets of matchups will be, starting with a midweek doubleheader against Fort Hays State on Tuesday. Next weekend, Southern Nazarene will come to the Athletic Complex for another conference series.
Sunday was a good overall day both offensively and defensively.
Brianna Cryer earned the decision win thanks to 5.1 innings of 1-run softball in the circle. ATU threatened in the sixth and was able to remove Cryer, but Kaylee Barkley entered and was able to eliminate the threat and keep the score right where it was. She would throw the rest of the way to earn her second save of the season.
Meanwhile the lineup got a pair of runs in three innings to give plenty of run support. Skyla McPhillips doubled in the first run of the game in the second inning and Cierah Jones followed that up with a two-out RBI single.
Jones was the catalyst in the fifth as well, leading things off with a double and later came around to score. Barkley, who was also hitting, drove in Jones on a fielder's choice and Dani Carmo walked with the bases loaded to add another run.
For extra insurance, Maddie Rahon singled in two more runs an inning later to make it 6-1.
Jones finished a perfect 3-3 on the afternoon with an RBI and two runs scored. Rahon, 2-3, was the other Bulldog to finish with multiple hits. SWOSU outhit Arkansas Tech 9-7 in the game.
It's the first time SWOSU has won in Russellville since 2012 – the first year of the Great American Conference.
