Northwestern Takes Both Ends of Spring Break Doubleheader

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Softball endured a rain delay before falling in both ends of a Spring Break midweek conference doubleheader against rival Northwestern. The Dawgs dropped 8-6 and 3-1 contests on Tuesday.

SWOSU will remain at home and will prepare to host Harding this weekend in more Great American Conference action. The two will play a single game on Friday, March 17 before wrapping up the series a day later on Saturday with a doubleheader.

GAME ONE – Northwestern 8, SWOSU 6

Five unanswered Ranger runs in the sixth and seventh innings doomed the Dawgs in the day's opening game. SWOSU led 6-3 after five innings before Northwestern spoiled things.

Katie Boline and Kaylee Barkley drove in all six runs in the contest. Boline doubled in a pair of runs in the first inning and had a sac fly bring in another in the fifth. Meanwhile, Barkley singled in one more in the first and hit a two-run home run in the third.

Brianna Cryer started in the circle and pitched 5.2 innings before handing the ball off to Taryn Westbrook with two outs after Northwestern cut the lead to 6-5.

The Rangers were able to rally off Westbrook after two quick outs in the final inning. An error jump started the inning followed by a walk, a double, and finally single which allowed the Rangers to overtake the Dawgs and claim the win.

GAME TWO – Northwestern 3, SWOSU 1

The nightcap proved to be a pitcher's duel, unfortunately won by Northwestern who allowed one run to SWOSU's three.

Taryn Westbrook continued to pitch following the completion of game one and gave the Dawgs a quality start. She scattered seven hits and struck out one in a complete game effort.

The SWOSU lineup managed five hits and scored its lone run in the third inning, which at the time, answered Northwestern's first run of the game and tied things back up at 1-1. Kaylee Barkley delivered the RBI single, but the Dawgs stranded the bases loaded in the inning.

SWOSU left eight runners on base in game two.

Meanwhile, the Rangers scored single runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to edge the Dawgs.
