WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Women's Basketball trailed Henderson State by 15 points entering the fourth quarter but clawed back and had the game within two possessions in the final two minutes before the Reddies finally put the game away for good. The Lady Bulldogs eventually fell 62-57, pushing their losing streak to five games.
SWOSU started fast out of the gate. They jumped out to an early 9-3 lead before the visiting Reddies settled in and regained the lead by the end of the first quarter. Henderson never trailed after the 9-8 mark.
The visitors outscored the Lady Dawgs in each of the first three quarters – leading by eight points at halftime, 34-26, and by 15 points after three quarters, 52-37. SWOSU did not go down easily though.
In the fourth quarter, SWOSU used a 13-4 run to make things interesting late. Fayth Laughlin knocked down a three pointer that had the margin within six points just under the halfway mark of the quarter.
Things got tighter down the stretch but time was SWOSU's biggest enemy. The margin got to four points with under 10 seconds to play, but never any closer.
Morgan Smith led the home side with 18 points on 50% shooting and 4-of-7 from deep. Shamica Smith added 10 points while grabbing a career high 15 rebounds. Averi Zinn tallied nine points and tied her career high of seven assists.
Offensively, SWOSU just did not shoot well enough to get over the hump. They finished at 31% as a team, compared to just under 40% from the Reddies. Both sides looked similar in three-point numbers and free throws.
The Lady Dawgs did win the turnover battle 16-12 but were edged out in rebounding 48-44.
Conference action continues Saturday in Weatherford against Ouachita Baptist. SWOSU will look to avenge an 82-67 loss to the Tigers that came back on January 12 in Arkadelphia.
