Boone Earns First Career Win, Softball Splits Opening Day

LUBBOCK, Texas – SWOSU Softball Head Coach Jessica Boone earned the first win of her coaching career on Saturday following an 11-7 victory over Newman. The Bulldogs split their day one action after falling 2-1 to Nebraska-Kearney a few hours earlier.

The LCU Tournament will conclude Sunday against a pair preseason ranked teams. SWOSU will face No. 22 Washburn at noon and finish with the host, #21 Lubbock Christian right after.

Game One – Nebraska Kearney 2, SWOSU 1

SWOSU got a great performance in the circle from Taryn Westbrook and led 1-0 into the sixth inning, but were upended late after the Lopers delivered a go-ahead two-run homerun in the sixth and hung on from there.

A Maddie Rahon solo home run in the third inning put the Dawgs ahead midway through the game. Westbrook faced base runners throughout but did her job and kept Kearney from plating any runs until the inevitable home run shifted the outcome.

The offense managed three hits in the contest, two of those for extra basing including Rahon's dinger. Westbrook scattered five hits herself while striking out four and walking four.

Game Two – SWOSU 11, Newman 7

Jordyn Wadley hit a pair of three-run home runs and finished the night 2-for-3 with six RBI and a walk. She homered in the first inning and again in the sixth as part of a five-run inning that broke the game open.

Entering the sixth inning, the score was tied 6-6 after SWOSU had made things equal one inning prior. With one out, Wadley put the Bulldogs ahead with her swing. Later in the inning, Caitlin Delaney added to the damage with a two-out double that scored another two runs.

Rahon finished 2-for-4 to add to her solid day at the plate. The lineup produced 11 hits in the game from nine different batters – scoring three runs in the first inning, two in the second, one in the fifth, and finally five in the sixth.

Brianna Cryer (W, 1-0) threw a complete game in the circle. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.
