WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball couldn't pull off the weekend sweep of Ouachita after suffering a 16-14 loss in Sunday's third and final game of the home conference series. It was a game that took nearly four hours to complete and featured 30 runs scored with 29 hits between the two teams.
Despite the loss, the Bulldogs still claim the series victory thanks to a sweep of Saturday's doubleheader action. They are now 2-4 in conference play through two weekends of the young season.
The Bulldogs led 11-7 after six innings but were done in by back-to-back four-run innings by the Tigers in the seventh and eighth and an insurance run in the ninth.
It wasn't an ideal start in the first inning after Ouachita scored four runs to jump out to a quick lead. That was quickly erased after SWOSU answered with five runs of their own just a half inning later.
Walks were an issue on both sides Sunday. Ouachita walked seven and hit another batter, while the Bulldog pitching staff issued nine free passes and three additional hit batsmen.
SWOSU thought they might have delivered a harder blow to the opposition in the bottom of the sixth inning when they broke open a 7-7 tie with four runs. The inning featured four hits – three of those doubles.
The Tigers tied things up a half inning later before SWOSU grabbed its final lead of the game with an unearned run in the seventh.
Now 12-11, Ouachita again added four more runs and took the lead for good.
Eight SWOSU pitchers made appearances in the contest.
Markus Coronado had a 4-5 day at the plate with five RBI. Geoff Marlow, Alec Worden, and Emilio Trevino all had two hits apiece. Marlow also homered in the contest for his second of the season.
Next up for the Dawgs will be a midweek non-conference game against USAO at home on Tuesday. First pitch for that is scheduled for 2pm.
