WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball went ahead and claimed the series victory over Ouachita after sweeping the day's action by final scores of 4-2 and 7-4. It was a great response against a good team following a winless opening GAC series last weekend.
To emphasize the day's success, Ouachita competed in the NCAA Tournament last season and the Dawgs swept 'em Saturday.
The Dawgs will try to 3-0 the Tigers with an early 10:00 am first pitch tomorrow morning.
GAME ONE – SWOSU 4, OUA 2
Matt Milner went six strong innings of scoreless baseball, was given a one-run lead in the fourth, and picked up the win in the day's first game.
Extra-base hits were the spark plug to runs in game one. After three scoreless innings to start, Jackson Syring tripled in the fourth and was drove in by Reece Burke immediately after which put the home team up 1-0.
In the seventh, a leadoff double by Emilio Trevino jumpstarted an inning that eventually would lead to more run production. Alex Rice singled to left to score Trevino who advanced to third on an error following a sacrifice bunt attempt. Syring stepped in later in the inning and delivered a two out, two RBI single to extend the margin to 4-0.
In relief of Milner, Bryson Armstrong came in for two innings before handing the ball over to Chris Goldston who pitched the ninth. Armstrong pitched a quick seventh before allowing two runs in the eighth.
Goldston earned the save but not before things got interesting. Two walks and a swinging bunt later, the bases were loaded with no outs. Back-to-back strikeouts let fans breath a little, and a fly out to left ended things.
Syring, Rice, and Geoff Marlow all finished with two hits apiece to lead the lineup. Caleb Clines walked three times and finished a quiet 0-1.
GAME TWO – SWOSU 7, OUA 4
Jackson Phillips took a no-hitter into the fifth in the nightcap and was provided seven runs of insurance before Ouachita managed to get on the scoreboard.
Things started quick offensively in the first inning. Alex Rice dropped a bunt down for a hit and scored courtesy of a Geoff Marlow sacrifice fly. Jackson Syring then doubled with two outs and it was immediately followed by a Cade Hamilton bomb to put SWOSU up 3-0.
Three more runs came in the third inning following some Ouachita fielding blunders. A manufactured run an inning later concluded SWOSU's scoring.
In the fifth, a pair of walks issues by Phillips followed by a home run is how the shutout and no-no was broken up. Ouachita got one more run in the sixth but did not threaten any after an isolated triple caused the run.
Rice and Syring again made things happen with two hits each in the second game. It was Hamilton's first home run of the season. Griffin Larsen also doubled in the contest.
