OKLAHOMA – SWOSU Softball had a tough day of competition at the GAC/MIAA Crossover, facing two teams with combined records of 16-3 to start the season. The Bulldogs fell 6-0 to No. 1-ranked Rogers State, the defending Division II National Champion, and 10-8 to Northeastern State later in the evening.
Action will conclude tomorrow with another pair of games, this time against Nebraska-Kearney and Central Oklahoma.
Game 1 – #1 RSU 6, SWOSU 0
Unfortunately for the Dawgs, falling behind 1-0 in the first inning would end up being the difference maker. Rogers State broke things open in the third inning with five hits for five more runs of insurance and went on to win 6-0.
SWOSU finished with two hits – one each from
Skyla McPhillips and
Cierah Jones.
Brianna Cryer (L, 1-3) pitched all seven innings while giving up seven hits and six runs, five of those earned. She struck out five but walked five.
Game 2 – NSU 10, SWOSU 8
Despite falling behind 8-0 after two innings, SWOSU didn't go away. Beginning in the third inning, they plated runs in every inning but the sixth including a three-run fifth and seventh.
NSU got an extra two runs of insurance in their half of the fourth that came in handy late.
The Dawgs sent the tying run to the plate in the seventh after
Skyla McPhillips hit her second home run of the game but they could not continue the late-game magic.
Jordyn Wadley also homered in the game and hit a double.
Taryn Westbrook (L, 0-4) started in the circle and gave way to
Kaylee Barkley in relief who pitched 3.2 innings of scoreless softball. Westbrook allowed all 10 runs, but only five of those were earned after a two-out error in the field in the first inning proved to be costly.
