WICHITA FALLS, Texas – SWOSU Softball finished up play at the Midwestern State Invitational on Sunday. They took down the host Midwestern State 10-8 before dropping the late game to Cameron 11-0. They ended the tournament with a 2-3 record over three days.
The Bulldogs will head back to Weatherford and prepare for their home opener. Fort Hays State comes to town on Thursday for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 1:00 pm.
GAME ONE – SWOSU 10, Midwestern State 8
SWOSU's bats were hot for the opening game. They had runners reach base every inning except the seventh. It got started early with all nine batters seeing a plate appearance. The Bulldogs scored three runs in the first, but the Mustangs answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning.
SWOSU continued off the good start and added five more in the next two innings. MSU added a couple more runs to stay close enough to have one last opportunity with their final three outs.
The Dawgs went three up and three down to go into the bottom of the seventh up 10-5. Even with this five-run lead, Midwestern State made SWOSU sweat a good amount. They hit a leadoff double and then a two-run home run to close the gap to two. After a pop up and a groundout, the Bulldogs survived.
Kaylee Barkley collected the win to improve her record to 2-0 on the year.
Jordyn Wadley batted 2-for-2, scoring three runs and two RBIs.
Skyla McPhillips acquired three RBIs. SWOSU did get nine hits, but were helped by the Midwestern State pitchers walking 15 Bulldog batters.
GAME TWO – Cameron 11, SWOSU 0 (5 Innings)
The night cap versus Cameron was a different story than the first game. The offense that was clicking in the first game went cold. Caitlyn Delaney came up with the two hits for SWOSU, going 2-for-2 with two singles.
Pitching was solid to start.
Makale Floyd performed well in the first two innings, holding Cameron to one run and two hits. The third inning is where things unraveled.
Cameron reached base with their first four batters and scored two runs before an out was recorded. A couple loaded bases walks and a home run to left field saw nine runs scored in the third and brought the Aggie advantage to 10-0.
SWOSU loaded the bases in the top of the fourth but didn't capitalize and left all of them stranded. Two strikeouts in the fifth sealed the five-inning end in this one.
