WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball nearly pulled off an impressive last-inning comeback in Saturday's opening game before claiming a 7-0 shutout win in the nightcap to salvage a split of the day with Adams State.
SWOSU and ASU will conclude the four-game series tomorrow at noon. The Dawgs currently lead the series 2-1.
GAME ONE – ASU 10, SWOSU 9
Trailing 10-4 in the final inning, the Bulldogs plated five runs and had the game tying and game winning runs on base before a double play ball derailed the comeback in its tracks.
The day started poorly though. SWOSU found themselves playing from behind for a second straight game after surrendering five runs and committing four errors before getting the game's first three outs.
Grant Ewy (L, 0-1) settled in after the rocky defensive start and threw 5.0 innings before being relieved in the sixth inning. He allowed eight runs, but only four earned and was handed the loss.
Philip Sanders, Jay Greco, and Jack Correll saw action out of the bullpen.
Jackson Syring ended his small hitless streak to start the season by finishing 2-for-5 with a double, two RBI, and two runs scored. Caleb Clines went a perfect 4-for-4 and drove in a run.
GAME TWO – SWOSU 7, ASU 0
Jackson Phillips gave SWOSU 5.2 innings of three hit baseball on the mound followed by Jace Edlen who kept Adams State scoreless the rest of the way for the combined shut out.
The start on the mound was just what the Dawgs needed to rebound from a tough game one. Phillips struck out nine and walked only one to earn the first win as a Bulldog.
While the pitching performed, so did the hitters. SWOSU collected nine hits – five for extra bases – and had a base runner in every single inning. Alex Rice homered in the game, a two-RBI bomb to right field in the fourth, and Reece Burke tripled.
SWOSU jumped out to a 3-0 lead to start the game and tacked on three more in the fourth inning and one final insurance run in the fifth.
Geoff Marlow led the lineup by going 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
