WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball scored 14, yes, 14 runs in Sunday's first inning and went on to defeat Adams State 18-7 in a shortened seven-inning game due to run rule. In doing so, they claimed the series win by taking three-of-four from the visiting Grizzlies.
The Bulldogs move to 3-4 on the young season and will take the midweek off coming up to prepare for the opening conference series against Henderson State next weekend in Arkadelphia.
For the third time in four games, SWOSU found themselves trailing after the first inning again after Adams State plated two runs to jump out ahead.
That deficit did not last long though. The Dawgs proceeded to send 18 hitters to the plate in the home half of the first and racked up 10 hits to deliver a devasting answer. The offense did not have an out recorded against them until the eighth batter of the game.
The first inning took nearly an hour to wrap up as both sides took advantage of the strong wind blowing to dead center field.
From there, the pace of place quickened as pitchers settled in and collected more outs.
SWOSU added single runs in the third and fourth innings via home runs and put up a two spot in the fifth.
Chris Goldston (W, 1-1) did what he needed to do to earn the win and pitch with the lead he was given. He struck out nine but walked five.
Patrick Babcock (0.2 IP) and Ernesto Hidrogo (1.1 IP) both saw action in relief and did not allow a run.
Offensive numbers looked great on Sunday. SWOSU had 16 hits, seven for extra bases, and saw every single player in the starting lineup get at least one knock.
Jackson Syring finished 2-for-3 with an inside the park home run and a triple. Caleb Clines went 3-for-4 with his first home run of the season and finished an impressive 9-for-12 (.750) on the weekend.
