WEATHERFORD – SWOSU women's basketball held the first home Great American Conference contest of the season on Saturday afternoon. After a back and forth affair, SWOSU pulled away in the final minute to win 52-49.
SWOSU improves to 4-3 and 2-0 in the GAC. They'll take a break from GAC play for their last non-conference game next Monday when Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) comes to Weatherford for a 5:30 pm contest.
Mason Jones and
Averi Zinn had monster performances for the Lady Bulldogs on Saturday. Jones scored a career high 21 points on 7-for-7 from the floor which included a 6-of-6 from behind the arc. Zinn also scored 21 points on 8-of-14 shooting and hit a trio of three-pointers herself. They combined for 42 points -- a whopping 81% of SWOSU's points on the day.
Both defenses came to play early. The teams failed to get in rhythm in the first quarter and after 10 minutes of game time, the score was knotted at 10-10.
SWOSU began the second with newfound energy. Four long range shots sparked a run that gave the Lady Dawgs a 22-13 lead midway through the second quarter. Southeastern flipped that on SWOSU and closed the quarter on a 12-2 run to grab a one-point advantage during the halftime break.
The Lady Bulldogs grabbed another double-digit lead in the third quarter and looked to push the game out of reach. The Savage Storm refused to allow that, cutting the lead back down to two with nine minutes remaining in the game.
A jump shot at the 5:09 mark in the final period put Southeastern on top 49-48. This would be the last score for the visitors though as from there on the SWOSU defense put on a late game clinic. They limited SEOSU to 0-of-4 shooting and forced three turnovers. The most important play of the matchup came when
Chloe Cantrell came away with a steal and threw it ahead to
Mason Jones for a layup to give SWOSU a 50-49 lead with 1:14 left.
SWOSU shot 18-of-59 (30.5%) overall and 10-for-28 (35.7%) from behind the arc. Southeastern was 15-of-48 (31.3%) from the field and just 4-for-19 (21.1%) from three.
