WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Football was held scoreless on Senior Day in a 56-0 loss to Henderson State. The Reddies entered the day receiving votes in the AFCA Division II National Poll.
The Reddie defense limited the Bulldogs to just 117 yards of total offense in the game and had the Bulldogs playing from their side of the 50-yard line nearly the entire way. SWOSU crossed midfield on two drives in the contest but had no points to show for it. It's the second time this season SWOSU has been shutout.
Henderson State intercepted four passes on the day including a pair of third quarter pick-six touchdowns.
SWOSU's best offensive drive of the contest came in the first quarter, but a methodical 14-play drive eventually stalled on the HSU 24-yard line. Trailing 21-0 at the time, the Dawgs were forced to go for it on fourth down and could not convert.
The Reddies had 327 yards of offense by halftime and led 35-0 at the break. They scored on five of their six drives in the first two quarters to open up the large lead. Two big pass plays gave them their first two scores, and they added three more rushing touchdowns after.
Another 148 yards by the visitors were tallied in the second half, mainly on the ground, and HSU finished with 475 total for the game.
A pair of SWOSU seniors, Richard Silva and RJ Powell, both had solid games on defense. Silva recorded a sack on the first play of the day and finished with nine tackles, 2.5 of those for loss. Powell had a sack fumble and matched Silva with nine tackles. Tye Tucker set a season high with eight tackles.
On offense, SWOSU got a majority of yardage from Dexter Brown. He rushed 23 times for 79 yards.
The 2023 season will conclude next Saturday on the road against Northwestern. Kickoff for that game in Alva will come at 3:00 p.m.
