SHAWNEE, Okla. – SWOSU soccer grabbed a 1-0 road win against Oklahoma Baptist on Wednesday night. The Bison entered the night, and remain even after the result, in contention for a conference championship and the Dawgs knocked them off to clinch a spot in the postseason tournament for a ninth straight year.
The win slots SWOSU into the GAC Tournament, but the regular season finale will decide final seeding. Soccer holds Senior Day at the SWOSU Athletic Complex on November 4 at 11 am against Southern Nazarene.
Oklahoma Baptist lived in the attacking half of the field early in the game. The Bison were able to weave deep into SWOSU territory, but the Dawgs' backline packed the box once they got there. Both sides had quality chances to score in the first half.
Hannah Guiterrez had an opening on the left side of the box in the 32' but the shot was narrowly saved by the Bison goalie. OBU nearly had a goal, but the shot bounced off the top crossbar and cleared out of the box before a rebound opportunity could be had. The score remained 0-0 at the break.
In the early stages of the second half,
Julie Andersen booted a long pass down to
Philippine de Sancy who drew a foul right outside the box for a free kick. The freshman took the free kick and put it past the outstretched goalkeeper for the game winning goal. After allowing the score, Oklahoma Baptist became aggressive on the offensive end. Their attack was consistent, but again the SWOSU defense yielded nothing to the opponent to secure the win.
Amelia Forsling gets the shutout win with three saves, grabbing her second straight shutout. With the lone goal in the match, de Sancy now has three goals on the season.
