WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Volleyball had things rolling against perennial Great American Conference contender Oklahoma Baptist through two sets on Tuesday night but could not collect the third, and most important, set victory and eventually fell to the Bison in reverse sweep fashion.
SWOSU (8-5, 3-2 GAC) saw itself win two straight sets to begin the match before momentum shifted late in the second set. The Bulldogs led 24-18 before OBU rattled off five straight points to start making things interesting. A service error eventually allowed SWOSU to go up 2-0 in the match, but the Bison got what they wanted out of the spurt – momentum – and they never let it go.
In sets three through five, the Bulldogs trailed nearly wire-to-wire for the duration. Riding momentum from the previous scoring spurt, OBU jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and won it handily. A mid-set run by the Bison in the fourth broke an otherwise competitive set open and led to a fifth-set showdown.
Set five was not what SWOSU was looking for. OBU again jumped out to an early lead, this time at 4-0 and then 9-2. The Bulldogs showed fight late, but the hole built at the beginning was too deep to overcome.
Final numbers showed SWOSU hitting .151 as a unit, their lowest mark in eight matches. Oklahoma Baptist hit right at .200, just the third opponent the Dawgs have allowed to get over the .200 threshold this season.
Both sides had a strong block on Tuesday. OBU finished with 11.0 total blocks (6s-10a) while SWOSU had 10.0 (4s-12a) from mainly Hailey Smith and Zoey Sparks who combined for seven of the 10.
Three Bulldogs finished with 11 kills apiece led by Taryn Galt's .233 percentage.
Jada Permenter led the team with 26 digs. Setters Terez Chavez and Cameron Turner combined for 45 assists. Lacy Mott had three service aces.
