Gunnarsson’s Goals Push SWOSU over Harding

WEATHERFORD – SWOSU soccer hosted the Harding Bisons on Wednesday afternoon for a Great American Conference matchup. Despite a late game push from Harding, Elvira Gunnarsson's two goals gave SWOSU the victory 2-1.

This win improves SWOSU's record to 3-8-3 overall and 3-3-2 in the GAC on the year. After defeating Harding on September 27, SWOSU completes the season sweep of Harding and keeps the Dawgs firmly in the race for the GAC Tournament. Their next matchup is against the league leading Ouachita Baptist in Arkadelphia at 11 am on October 21.

Elvira Gunnarsson led SWOSU's offense today. She scored two goals on two shots for her first multi-goal game as a Bulldog. Her first goal came off a free kick from around midfield. Julie Andersen booted the ball into a host of players and it eventually found Gunnarsson on the left side of the box for a left footed score. Micaella Swain set up the second goal with a beautiful cross into the box, where Gunnarsson headed the ball out of the air straight into the back of the net.

Both of these goals came in the first half. The SWOSU defense only allowed four shots in the first. Harding came out with a different energy in the final 45. Their defense tightened up, giving SWOSU's offense only two shots in the second period.

The Bisons scored with less than five minutes gone in the half. The goal was similar to the Dawgs' first goal, set up by a long free kick. They doubled up the Bulldogs in shots in the second half as the SWOSU offense tired later in the match. The Dawgs' backline came up clutch and stood tall to keep Harding off the scoreboard the rest of the game.
