WEATHERFORD, Okla. – On Saturday afternoon in the Pioneer Cellular Event Center, the SWOSU women took down Southeastern Oklahoma State 64-56. The win wasn't the prettiest win ever, but it was a win nonetheless. It can be attributed to stingy defense, some timely buckets, and
Averi Zinn's 21 points.
SWOSU improves to 5-10 and an even 5-5 in the GAC. Their next game will be in Weatherford again as they host Northwestern Oklahoma State at 5:30 pm on January 23.
Averi Zinn led SWOSU in scoring again with 21 points, getting isolation buckets and hitting free throws when it was needed most in crunch time. She also grabbed six rebounds as the shortest player on the floor, sometimes coming out of contested situations versus bigger opponents with the ball.
The game started off as a track meet. The game clock didn't stop for the first time until midway through the first quarter. This aided the Lady Dawgs who got off to a slow start. They went 4-15 in the first and all four makes were from behind the three-point line.
The second quarter brought some more fast paced gameplay. 18 combined first half turnovers highlighted the sloppy play that came with this pace. The game was close throughout the entire first half, yet the Savage Storm held the lead for 19 of the 20 minutes.
The second half is where the Lady Dawgs turned the game around. Coach Zinn's pressure defense was tough for SE to deal with by denying one pass away and rotating correctly on the backside. Forcing 11 turnovers and holding Southeastern to 36% shooting helped SWOSU outscore them 36-27 in the second half to come out with the eight-point victory.
SWOSU shot 37% from field and 27% from three. SE shot 43% and 36% from three. The advantage for SWOSU was in opportunities. They shot 68 times and 34 threes to Southeastern's 47 shots and 14 three-point attempts. SWOSU turned SE over 21 times and scored 21 points off of those turnovers.
Macy Gore gave the Lady Dawgs 10 points, four assists, and four rebounds.
Adysen Wilson shot 3-4 from three to total nine points.
Fayth Laughlin and
Layni Zinn both totaled four steals a piece.
