SWOSU Steals Win After High Scoring Fourth Quarter

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The SWOSU women's basketball team was on the court in Shawnee tonight, where they stole a win against Oklahoma Baptist 83-77.

This win improves SWOSU to 4-10 and 4-5 in GAC play. They will have a couple days off before looking to create a winning streak versus Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday at 11 am in Weatherford.

SWOSU shot 71% from the field, 56% from three, and 100% from the line en route to scoring 38 points in the fourth quarter to stun the Bison on their home court. The Bison had a nine-point lead heading into the final frame and looked to close out the Lady Bulldogs as past opponents have, but SWOSU had other plans.

The Lady Bulldogs started the game well. They shot 50% from the field and 4-7 from three in the opening 10 minutes to take a 20-14 lead. Their defense showed up as well, playing solid fundamental defense and forcing five turnovers.

The second quarter brought a combined 12-37 shooting in the period. The Lady Dawgs stayed ahead with their willingness to do the dirty work. Six offensive rebounds and multiple charges taken were key factors in the score at halftime being in favor of SWOSU.

Oklahoma Baptist didn't lead in this game until 6:03 left in the third quarter. They took the lead and extended it all the way to the largest lead of the game, 52-42, with less than a minute left in the quarter. A poor shooting quarter from SWOSU saw OBU taking a nine-point lead into the fourth.

SWOSU came out in the fourth quarter and took the game by force. They persevered through the double-digit deficit and took the lead back with 4:38 in the fourth. The lead was never relinquished after this. Both teams went basket for basket on consecutive possessions after the Lady Bulldogs grabbed the lead back, but SWOSU didn't miss a shot for the last three minutes and change to close out the game.

SWOSU shot 45% from the field and 39% from three. OBU shot 49% from the floor and 57% from three. Despite the disparity in percentages, SWOSU shot 28 threes to OBU's 14. The rebounding margin was 34-33 in favor of Oklahoma Baptist. Even while getting outrebounded, this is a huge improvement on the glass for the Lady Dawgs.

Averi Zinn had two points heading into the fourth then exploded for 19 in the final period. She ended with 21 points to go along with four assists and three rebounds. Shamica Smith scored 16 points while grabbing a career high 13 rebounds. Macy Gore scored 17 points and dished out eight assists.
