WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU soccer welcomed No. 8 Colorado-Colorado Springs for their first home game of the season Saturday morning. They would fight hard, but ultimately end up with a loss, 2-1.
It was a very physical game with 14 combined fouls and three combined yellow cards. UCCS was the aggressor all game as they had a commanding lead over the Lady Dawgs in total shots (30-7), shots on goal (14-7), and corner kicks (7-2) across the 90 minutes of play.
UCCS took a 2-0 lead into halftime from a 20' goal and a 43' goal. SWOSU's lone goal came in the 60' from
Launa Torrez. She had broken free from the back line and had one defender to beat heading towards the box. She made one swift move, put the ball past the UCCS back, and fit the ball into a tight window in the bottom left corner of the goal.
Torrez lead the Dawgs with two shots and her goal.
Emmy Wagner also added two shots and one shot on goal off of the bench. Starting goalkeeper
Ashley Hughes went down late in the first half, but
Kirstyn Dill would play well in relief. Dill collected 8 saves in the second half, with a couple impressive diving saves.
The SWOSU soccer team drops to 0-2-1 on the young season. They hit the field next on Thursday September 8 at home against West Texas A&M at 4:00 PM.
