WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Soccer and undefeated West Texas A&M played to a 0-0 draw in the first half of Thursday's home match, but the Lady Buffs broke through in the second half with a pair of goals and went on to win 2-1.
The Bulldogs got a score late to make the final six minutes interesting, but inevitably ran out of time as they pressed to get the equalizer.
WT was on the attack in the first half and had the Bulldogs playing defense early. The Lady Buffs won the shot count 12-5 through the first 45 minutes and it translated to field control. Despite controlling the ball, SWOSU played strong defense and avoided any scores.
To start the second half, SWOSU began to get better looks and threatened to score a pair of times out of the locker room. WT settled in though, and the two began to play to a similar tune of the first half.
The visiting Lady Buffs finally broke through in the 67th minute with a low-lying shot from the top of the box that found net. 10 minutes later, they extended the lead on a cross that found a player in wait ready to kick it home from 10 feet.
Launa Torrez got one back in the 84th minute following a rebounded shot, and the stakes were raised the rest of the way with the Dawgs now within striking distance. It was her second straight match scoring a goal.
No other goal would come from either side.
SWOSU falls to 0-3-1 heading into their match with Oklahoma Christian this Saturday. The Bulldogs have played a strong non-conference schedule so far this season, with losses to a pair of nationally top-10 ranked teams and now an undefeated West Texas A&M squad. The experience should prove beneficial as the conference season gets underway next week.
