RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – Ashley Hughes was named the Great American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week after her shutout performance last week against Northwestern.
SWOSU Soccer has now had two different goalkeepers be named the Great American Conference Goalkeeper of the Week with both Kirstyn Dill and now Hughes winning the weekly honor in two of the season's first three chances.
In SWOSU's only match last week against Northwestern, Hughes collected eight saves including six in the second half to help keep the Rangers off the scoreboard. The two rivals battled in a one score match for most of the game until a late insurance goal in the 88th minute ended the drama.
Eight saves represents Hughes' second highest save total of the season, two fewer than the 10 she had against West Texas A&M.
With the win, SWOSU moved to 1-0 in GAC play. It was also the first win of 2022 after the Bulldogs opened the season against stiff non-conference competition.
The Bulldogs take a break from conference action tonight with a road match against Midwestern State. They will resume GAC play Thursday when they remain on the road and travel to play East Central.
