WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Football dropped a wild high-scoring affair 58-48 to Southeastern at home on Saturday. The Bulldogs scored a season high point total on offense but could not keep pace with the clicking Savage Storm offense who racked up 592 yards on the night.
The loss was SWOSU's first at home this season. The Dawgs drop to 1-2 on the year and will be on the road next week to face Oklahoma Baptist.
The game's first half was a crazy one that featured nearly an hour long first quarter. In that quarter, fans nearly saw everything on special teams with plays such as a blocked punt by SE go for a score, a muffed punt by SE that gave possession back to the Dawgs, and a SWOSU safety on a poorly snapped ball by SE.
The Savage Storm scored the game's first 17 points thanks to an opening drive touchdown and that blocked punt scoop and score, followed by a field goal. With 5:56 left to play in the first half, it was the Savage Storm leading 17-0.
Then came SWOSU's response.
Isreal Watson caught a pass from
Tylan Morton from 11 yards out to get the Bulldogs on the board. After a stop on defense had the Dawgs ready to get the ball back, SE gifted the home team two free points with the bad-snap safety when they lined up to punt.
SWOSU immediately got the ball back and got a 43-yard touchdown run from
Troy Henderson that threatened to tie the game up. Now 17-15, the Dawgs went for two to tie but failed.
After all the aforementioned – the first quarter came to a close.
Two interceptions in the second quarter plagued the Bulldogs and Southeastern went on to outscore the home team 27-12 to lead 44-27 at halftime. The Savage Storm scored with nearly no time remaining that pushed their lead out to three scores before the break.
To maintain the wacky theme of the half, SWOSU blocked a Savage Storm PAT try that was returned the length of the field for two points. It was the second two-point play of the half.
That special teams play, a
Jaren Van Winkle field goal, and
Jacob Karsak touchdown reception accounted for the second quarter scores.
Out of the locker room, it was a back-and-forth game nearly the rest of the way. Southeastern scored first, and the Dawgs would follow suit. The margin seemed to hover between 24 and 17 points depending on who had the ball. SWOSU got within 10 points late with another score, but that would be the closest they'd get.
Outside of the high scoring game, it was sloppy on both sides. The teams combined for 29 penalties and 292 yards. (SE 16-166yds, SWOSU 13-126yds)
Southeastern finished with 590 yards of total offense including 423 through the air. Quarterback Daulton Hatley finished 26-45 with five touchdown passes and one interception.
The Savage Storm were led by Deundre Wheeler on the ground with 128 yards and two scores.
SWOSU's
Tylan Morton finished 18-37 passing, matching his opposition's five touchdowns but with three interceptions that led to 10 points the other way.
Troy Henderson rushed for 89 yards on 12 carries which included his long touchdown run. He also caught a touchdown pass.
Mason Daugherty led the team with eight tackles.
Ashton Hamby accounted for SWOSU's interception.
