WEATHERFORD, Okla. – On a windy afternoon at the SWOSU Athletic Complex, the SWOSU soccer team picked up their first win against upstate rival Northwestern Oklahoma State, 2-0.
It wouldn't take long for SWOSU to get on the board in this one.
Micaella Swain hit the back of the net with an 11' goal off of her left foot. This is her first of the season. NWOSU would pace the Dawgs in shots in the first half, but the wind was a factor. Only two out of their seven shots were put on goal. It would be a slow rest of the first half after the lone goal, with the teams heading into the locker room with the score at 1-0.
The second half brought more shots than the first. Northwestern put the heat on goalkeeper
Ashley Hughes with nine shots and six on goal in this period. She stepped up and saved every ball that came her way for her first clean sheet of the season.
Ruth Vasquez put the game away in the 88' minute. She fired the ball right past the Ranger goalkeeper in the top left corner of the goal for goal number three of her freshman campaign.
Vasquez led the Dawgs with six shots, as well as her goal.
Micaella Swain had two shots and both of those being on goal.
Launa Torrez added an assist to the last-minute goal.
Ashley Hughes was excellent in the box, having eight saves on the day.
SWOSU improves to 1-3-2 on the year with this win and sends them to near the top of the GAC standings. Their next contest will be on September 20 in Wichita Falls against Midwestern State. This game is a make-up game from the September 1 game that was postponed.
