Volleyball Splits on Day Two of MSSU Tournament

JOPLIN, Mo. – SWOSU Volleyball was on both sides of the broom on Friday in the second day of the MSSU Lion Classic. They claimed the morning match over Truman State 3-0 before falling to Newman by the same score hours later.
 
The Dawgs will wrap up the tournament Saturday at noon against William Jewell. A win will push them back to .500 for the season.
 
Game One – SWOSU vs Truman State
W, 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-18)
 
After cruising to a first set win, SWOSU and Truman State were knotted up at 21-21 in the second set before the Dawgs closed on a 4-1 spurt to close it out.
 
SWOSU used the momentum from the second set to jump out to a 15-4 lead in what ended up being the third and final set.
 
Maicee Morgan and Lacy Mott both notched a double-double in the match. Morgan finished with 13 kills and 11 digs while Mott posted 12 kills and 13 digs.
 
The offense hit .239 as a team and the defense held firm and kept TSU at bay with a .106 hitting percentage.
 


Game Two – SWOSU vs Newman
L, 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 22-25)
 
The Bulldogs fell victim to nine service aces in the second game of the day, while hitting .177 collectively on offense.
 
Maicee Morgan was the lone attacker who managed to eclipse double-digit kills (11). She more than doubled the attempts (43) of the next best SWOSU player on offense.
 
SWOSU was tied 10-10 in the second set, but Newman ripped off 10 consecutive points to gain control back.
 
There was fight in the Bulldogs in the third set with the score knotted at 18-18, but Newman closed out strong to eliminate any chance of a comeback.
