CHICKASHA, Okla. – The Dawgs got 5.0 solid innings from
Grant Ewy on the mound, scored runs in five consecutive innings and got sturdy bullpen relief the rest of the way en route to an 8-2 midweek road victory over Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) on Tuesday.
The win avenges a previous 17-7 loss to the Drovers back on April 12 and closes out the midweek schedule for the year. SWOSU finishes the season with a 3-3 record in midweek games.
The regular season concludes this weekend with a final conference series against Northwestern at home, beginning on Friday. Seniors will be honored Saturday, prior to the day's doubleheader.
JC Reed homered in the game, belting his sixth home run of the season in the seventh inning for insurance. He finished 2-4 on the evening.
Griffin Larsen (1-5) and
Ramon Vingochea (2-4) both doubled in the contest.
The offense took advantage of seven walks and two hit-by-pitches from USAO pitchers in the game. Four of those free bases came around to score in the game. SWOSU plated runs in every inning from the third to the seventh.
Meanwhile, starting pitcher
Grant Ewy kept USAO in check throughout his start. He worked around a pair of solo home runs, but other than that – did not allow the Drovers to have any big innings or gain any momentum.
Rafael Perez-Guzman,
Matt Hopkins, and
Ernesto Hidrogo all pitched scoreless outings in relief.
The pitchers combined to strikeout 11 and walk only one. Behind them, the defense made plays consistently and did not commit an error.
