Baseball Drops Home Run Themed Series Opener

SHAWNEE, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball fell in the opening game of their series with Oklahoma Baptist by a final score of 7-4. The Dawgs fell victim to the long ball against the Bison, as six of OBU's seven runs were driven in via the long ball.

All SWOSU's runs on the evening also came from home runs. The Bulldogs got dingers from Jean Ortiz, Griffin Larsen, and Taylan Mullins-Ohm.

Ortiz started the scoring off in the third inning with a solo shot that broke the seal and plated the game's first run. OBU responded in their half of the third – first from a bunt and an error which scored a run and then a three-run home run to left field that made the score 4-1.

A pair of home runs from SWOSU in the fifth inning tied things back up, but also would be the last time they could score.

The Bison took the lead in their half of the fifth and added insurance in the seventh inning, both on home runs. Outside of an Enzo Bonventre walk, the Dawgs went quietly in the final two innings.

Philip Sanders suffered the loss on the mound and falls to 1-2 on the year. He pitched 6.0 innings and allowed six earned runs and an unearned run in the contest. Grant Ewy saw two innings in relief.

Outside of SWOSU's home run hitters, Alex Rice also had a good day at the plate. He finished 2-for-4 batting in the eight hole.

Saturday's action will kick off at 1pm in Shawnee when the two teams conclude the series with a doubleheader.
