Baseball Splits Saturday Slate, Drops Series at Ouachita

ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – SWOSU baseball traveled to Ouachita Baptist with momentum on their side after sweeping Southern Nazarene last weekend but fell twice to the Tigers and dropped the series 2-1.
 
Ouachita Baptist won the first game Friday, a single nine-inning contest, 14-4 in a shortened game due to run rule. SWOSU responded by opening Saturday with an 8-6 victory to force the rubber match, however dropped the third game 15-7 to lose the series.
.
SWOSU falls to 11-14 on the season and 6-9 in Great American Conference play. SWOSU will play their next game, 3 p.m. Tuesday, at home against Central Oklahoma.
 
Game One
Ouachita Baptist 14, SWOSU 4 (7 innings)
 
SWOSU scored the first run of the game when Cade Hamilton hit a home run over the left field fence in the top of the second inning.
 
The Tigers matched that run with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning. SWOSU did score three runs in the top of the third inning as Marc Gonzales recorded two RBI's with a double and Miguel Soto and Alex Rice scored. Gonzales would score when Hamilton recorded an RBI single.
 
However, Ouachita Baptist would score 13 unanswered runs and run ruled the Bulldogs 14-4. Ernesto Hidrogo (L, 2-2) started and pitched 4.2 innings and recorded three strikeouts but gave up 10 hits. Rafael Perez-Guzman came in to relieve Hidrogo and pitched the rest of the game, which lasted 1.1 innings.
 
Soto recorded three hits and reached base on all his at bats. Rice went 1-for-2 at the plate and the Bulldogs recorded nine total hits.
 
Game Two
SWOSU 8, Ouachita Baptist 6
 
SWOSU got on the board first in the top of the third inning when Hamilton recorded two RBIs with a double into left field. Taylan Mullins-Ohm and Gonzales scored, giving SWOSU a 2-0 advantage going into the bottom of the third inning.
 
Gonzales scored a run in the top of the fifth inning when Mullins-Ohm reached base after a throwing error by Ouachita Baptist.
 
Ouachita Baptist tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning, after a three-run home run. SWOSU answered in the top of the seventh inning by scoring four runs.
 
Soto scored from third base after a wild pitch, while Hamilton, Enzo Bonventre, and Carson Foreman all drove in runs. The Tigers then scored a run to make the score 7-4 with two innings to play.
 
Rice scored when Soto reached first base when Ouachita Baptist dropped a ball in the outfield. The Tigers had some fight in them and scored two runs going into the ninth inning.
 
Ouachita Baptist loaded the bases with two outs, but Philip Sanders recorded the final strikeout to get SWOSU the win.

Nate Postlethwait (W, 3-3) pitched six innings and recorded six strikeouts. Grant Ewy pitched two innings and recorded three strikeouts. Matt Hopkins pitched 0.1 inning and Sanders pitched 0.2 innings and recorded the final two strikeouts of the game.
 
Gonzales scored two runs and went 1-for-2 at the plate. Hamilton recorded three RBIs and recorded six hits.
 
Game Three
Ouachita Baptist 15, SWOSU 7
 
The series finale started close, before a nine-run fifth inning derailed SWOSU's chance at a series win.
 
 In the early going, the Dawgs jumped out to a 2-0 lead after single runs in the second and third innings.
 
Ouachita took the lead in the fifth with three of their own, but SWOSU responded with another single run in the fifth to knot things up at 3-3.
 
In Ouachita's half of the fifth, SWOSU struggled to get out of the inning. The Tigers sent 12 to the plate and took advantage of two hit by pitches and a walk, alongside five hits and an error. Ouachita's dagger was a three-run home run that pushed the game to 12-3 and essentially out of reach.  
 
SWOSU used five pitchers in the third game. Bryson Armstrong (L1-4) pitched 2.1 innings and recorded two strikeouts but gave up five hits. Hopkins, Dakota Jones, Ewy and Chase DeFillipo all pitched for SWOSU.

Bonventre went 4-for-4 at the plate and hit two home runs. Soto finished 2-for-4.
