EDMOND, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball dropped its second contest in as many days following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Emporia State on Monday. The Dawgs had chances late but could not push the necessary runs across to change the result.
JC Reed got the game scoring started in the fourth inning with a leadoff home run. SWOSU nearly plated another run in the inning after a two-out Griffin Larsen double had Samuel Fortier on the move around the bases, but a relay from the outfield got to home in time to tag out Fortier and eliminate the threat.
Nate Postlethwait (L, 0-1) got the start on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings before allowing three runs in his fifth and final inning. He finished his day with six strikeouts and two walks, allowing eight hits, and giving up three runs – two of those earned.
Chase DeFillipo came in for Postlethwait and pitched the remaining four innings effectively. He kept the Hornet offense at bay and kept SWOSU right in it by not allowing any runs in relief. He struck out five, walked three, and only allowed one hit.
Trailing 3-1, the Bulldog's strongest opportunity came in the eighth inning when they loaded the bases with no outs. Ramon Vingochea and Miguel Soto both singled to start things off, followed by a throwing error by the ESU third baseman that got Zach Baxley on.
SWOSU proceeded to strike out and then line out to the second baseman in the next two at-bats, before Brooks Red walked which scored Vingochea. Now 3-2, and with two outs, a strike out ended the inning.
In the ninth, the Dawgs got the game tying run on board with one out, but a game ending 4-6-3 double play spoiled the momentum.
Marc Gonzales had the best day at the plate. He finished 3-for-4 as SWOSU's only multi-hit performance. Reed joins Jean Ortiz on the team home run list. They both have now hit one long ball each this season.
SWOSU (1-2) concludes their Edmond First Pitch Classic appearance tomorrow against the host school, Central Oklahoma. First pitch for that contest is set for 5pm in Edmond.
