SWOSU Suffers First Loss of Season in Extra Innings

EDMOND, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball dropped their first game of the Edmond First Pitch Classic following a 6-4 loss to Pittsburg State in 10 innings.

The Dawgs led 3-0 through the middle innings thanks to RBI doubles by Ramon Vingochea and Alex Rice, along with a sacrifice fly by Marc Gonzales.

Pitt State chipped away at the lead in the sixth inning with two runs and took the lead in the seventh with another two runs.

SWOSU answered though in the eighth when Zach Baxley doubled and found a way to come around and score after a wild pitch and a passed ball moved him around.

Now tied 4-4, the game would go to extras where PSU plated two runs in the top half of the 10th inning. The Dawgs made things interesting by loading the bases in the bottom half, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the game.

Philip Sanders got the start on the mound for SWOSU. He finished with a line of 6.1 IP, six strikeouts, and four runs (all earned).  Grant Ewy saw 2.2 innings in relief and did not allow a run. Chase Hamilton (0-1) picked up the loss in his 10th inning outing.

Vingochea was SWOSU's only multi-hit performance. He finished 2-for-5 with an RBI. Overall offensively, SWOSU racked up seven hits compared to PSU's 11. The Dawgs did not commit an error on defense.

SWOSU (1-1) will take on their third straight MIAA opponent to start the season tomorrow when they battle Emporia State at noon in day two of the Edmond First Pitch Classic.
