Offense Goes Cold in Series Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Baseball managed to produce just one hit against Adams State in the series opener, a bunt, in a 3-1 loss on Friday.

With a heavy wind blowing into batters' faces, it was apparent a typical approach at the plate was not going to produce the same results on this day. Though this was true, both sides battled equally against the elements and Adams State was able to make more out of their opportunities than the home Bulldogs.

ASU slowly chipped in runs as the day went. They pieced together three scoring innings where they scored one run each time.

SWOSU tied the game at 1-1 in the fourth inning in what would be their only scoring occurrence of the day. Zach Baxley led off the inning with a bunt for a hit, and shortly after the Dawgs had the bases loaded with one out looking to get things going.

Though a fielder's choice on a ball hit to the pitcher allowed a run to cross, SWOSU popped up and struck out the next two at-bats to spoil the opportunity.

The Grizzlies tacked on another run in the fifth and sixth innings. From the fifth inning on the Dawgs managed just one baserunner – a hit by pitch in the ninth inning – the rest of the way.

Ernesto Hidrogo (L, 0-1) picked up the loss on the mound. He pitched 4.1 innings and allowed two runs while striking out five. Dakota Jones, Matt Hopkins, and Jarod Leroux all had appearances in relief. Jones allowed one run in his 1.2 innings of action.

The two teams will return to action tomorrow in a doubleheader starting at noon out at the Athletic Complex. Both games will be seven inning contests.
