WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU women's basketball fell a couple buckets short at home against Cameron on Thursday night, losing 71-65.
SWOSU falls to 1-7 on the season after this result. It was the last home game for the Lady Bulldogs in 2022. They will conclude play for the semester when they take on Southern Nazarene on Saturday at 1:00 PM in Bethany.
Cameron took control of the game early, jumping out to a 13-3 lead. They would hold this margin well and had a 22-12 lead after quarter one. The Aggies extended that further into the second quarter. Their largest lead was 21 points, leading 38-17 with 2:18 left in the second. The large hole that SWOSU faced was due to their shooting woes. The Lady Bulldogs shot 33% overall and 16.7% from three in the first half.
SWOSU came out in the second half energized. They went on an 11-0 run throughout the third quarter to cut into the lead, only trailing 43-51 going into the final 10 minutes. SWOSU gained back the ground by getting on the glass. They outrebounded Cameron 15-5 in the third and grabbed six offensive rebounds to Cameron's zero.
The fourth quarter was a back and forth affair with SWOSU slowly cutting the deficit down. Trailing 58-64,
Averi Zinn made a driving layup to make the Aggie lead only four points with 2:28 left. That was the closest SWOSU would get though, due to clutch free throw shooting from Cameron.
SWOSU finished the game at 39.1% from the field and 30% from three. Cameron shot 45.6% from the field and an impressive 50% from behind the three-point line. SWOSU forced 24 Aggie turnovers, but could not capitalize on them. They only scored 14 points off turnovers to Cameron's 13. Cameron amazingly only had four players score a point for them in the game.
Shamica Smith had a team high 16 points, eight rebounds, and two steals.
Morgan Smith was right behind her with 14 points, five rebounds, and two blocks. Averi and
Layni Zinn were the only other SWOSU players in double figures, adding 12 and 10 points respectively.
