WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU Men's Basketball did not have the start they were looking for Saturday against Arkansas-Monticello after only scoring six points in the first 13 minutes of the game. The Dawgs went on to lose 71-51, snapping their four-game winning streak in the process.
SWOSU struggled to score in the first half, only scoring 17 points through the first 20 minutes of play. One positive in the half was a 6-0 run, trailing 24-6 at the time, that cut their deficit to 12 points. However, UAM answered back and took a 33-17 lead at halftime.
Rebounding was a big issue for SWOSU, as they allowed nine offensive rebounds in the first half. Arkansas-Monticello is last in rebounding on offense in the GAC.
SWOSU did shoot well from the foul line though, finishing 5-of-6 (83%) in the first half.
The Dawgs did not go quietly in the second half. Still chipping away with seven minutes to play,
Kamden Gipson cut the deficit to seven points when he made three free throws after being fouled from beyond the arc.
That was as close as the Bulldogs would get though, as UAM went on to close the game on a 20-7 run.
SWOSU's offensive output improved in the second half, as they doubled their points scored from the first half.
As a team, the Dawgs shot just 25% collectively and 17% from the three-point line. It marks their lowest shooting percentage of the season.
Damion Thornton recorded a double-double, scoring 17 points and recording 10 rebounds.
Chris Braggs, Jr. scored 12 points. SWOSU struggled to shoot the basketball but shot well from the foul line at 21-for-26 (81%) overall.
SWOSU falls to 7-10 and falls to 6-6 in GAC play. They return to action next week, 7:30 p.m. Thursday at home against rival Northwestern Oklahoma State.
