SWOSU Softball Falls Twice at Arkansas Tech

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. – The SWOSU Softball team lost the first two games of a road Great American Conference series against Arkansas Tech on Sunday.
 
SWOSU dropped the first game 8-1 and lost the second game 12-4 in six innings to fall to 9-19 (9-14 GAC) on the year. The final game of the series will be at high noon Monday.
 
Game 1: Arkansas Tech 8, SWOSU 1
There was a rain delay which lasted almost an hour midway through the contest. SWOSU got on the board in the top of the first when Jordyn Wadley hit a ground ball and while she was thrown out, Jewell Lee scored from third base, giving SWOSU a 1-0 advantage. However, Arkansas Tech scored two runs in the bottom of the first, making it 2-1 after one inning of play.
 
Arkansas Tech opened the game up in the bottom of the fourth. They added five runs to the scoreboard and were ahead 7-1 going into the top of the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, they scored a run, making it 8-1 going into the top of the seventh.
 
SWOSU needed seven runs in the top of the seventh to keep the game alive. SWOSU had a base hit by Breanna Simmons in the top of the seventh, but Arkansas Tech got the three outs they needed to win the game. They defeated SWOSU 8-1.
 
SWOSU had four hits, compared to Arkansas Tech's 10 hits. Wadley had an RBI and Lee scored a run. She scored the first run of the game, but that was the only run SWOSU scored in the first game. Lee went 2-for-4 at the plate and Dani Carmo went 1-for-2 at the plate.
 
Miranda Grover pitched 3.1 innings and she recorded a strikeout while giving up seven hits. Alisa Friesen relieved Grover and Friesen recorded four strikeouts while allowing three hits.
 
Game 2: Arkansas Tech 12, SWOSU 4, (6 inn.)
SWOSU struck first when Dustie Pence had a bunt, but she reached base on an error by Arkansas Tech. Lee scampered to third and then scored off the error for the first run of the game. Arkansas Tech responded in the bottom of the first, which included a grand slam, took a 6-1 advantage after the first inning.
 
SWOSU scored in the top of the second when Sierra Chapa reached first base on a fielder's choice and Keanni Barron scored on the play, making it 6-2. The Lady Bulldogs scored two runs in the top of the third when Hannah Franklin hit a home run and Pence scored on this play, making the score 6-4. Arkansas Tech responded scoring a run in the bottom of the third, making the score 7-4.
 
Arkansas Tech ended the game in the bottom of the sixth, scoring six runs and SWOSU lost the game 12-4.
 
SWOSU had five hits and four RBIs in the second game. Franklin went 2-for-3 at the plate. Pence went 1-for-2 at the plate.
 
Brianna Cryer pitched and gave up four hits and six runs. Friesen came in to relieve Cryer, where she recorded two strikeouts, but gave up five hits and six runs.
