WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Another powerful offensive performance mixed with strong defense and pitching allowed the Bulldog Baseball team to defeat Arkansas Tech 11-4 on Sunday and complete the three-game series sweep against the Wonder Boys, who entered the weekend ranked first in the Great American Conference.
The Bulldogs were on the scoreboard after just three at-bats after
Alex Bedard led off with a double and scored on an RBI single from
Drew White. ATU answered with one run in the top of the second, but SWOSU starter
Grant Ewy got out of the jam and then worked around a bases-loaded situation in the third to keep it tied at 1-1 when the Dawgs came to the plate in the bottom of the third.
Bedard again led off an inning and scored in the third, beginning a stretch of six consecutive runs for the Bulldogs during the third, fourth and fifth innings as the lead was built to 7-1. During that stretch, White had an RBI double and
Zach Baxley brought White home with an RBI single in the third before Bedard had an RBI triple in the fourth and scored on a sac fly from White in the fourth.
Taylan Mullins-Ohm had an RBI single in the fifth as SWOSU scored in five consecutive innings from the third through the seventh.
ATU scored twice in the sixth and added one in the eighth, but SWOSU offset with a two-run double from
Miguel Soto, followed by another sac fly from White, which scored Bedard for the 11th and final run of the game.
Grant Ewy (1-0) tossed six strong innings as the starter, allowing 10 hits but limiting the damage to three runs thanks to timely pitching and three double plays behind him.
Chase Hamilton allowed one run on two hits over the seventh and eighth innings before
Haden Branch worked around one hit for a scoreless ninth inning.
SWOSU had 15 hits on the days and drew six walks as they scored 10 or more runs for the 11th time this season. Bedard and White led the way with three hits apiece while Soto and Baxley had two each, giving SWOSU 10 hits and seven runs scored from the top four hitters in the lineup.
"I couldn't be prouder of our team and the effort that we gave all weekend," SWOSU Head Coach
Zack Saunders said following the series. "That's probably the most complete series we've played all year and we couldn't have asked for it at a better time or against a better opponent."
SWOSU improves to 18-10 on the year and 15-9 in conference play with the win and the Dawgs now take a four-game win streak into Tuesday's non-conference matchup with Cameron, which will be played at 3:00 pm in Weatherford.
