ARKADELPHIA, Ark. – The SWOSU Softball team completed a three-game Great American Conference series at Ouachita Baptist on Saturday, but lost the series two games to one after falling in extra innings in the series finale.
SWOSU won the first game 5-0, which featured SWOSU's first shutout since March of 2019. The next two games were quite competitive ball games, but SWOSU lost the second game 5-4 and lost the rubber match 3-2 in nine innings.
SWOSU (6-10, 6-5 GAC) returns to the diamond, 1 p.m. Friday with a home GAC series against Henderson State.
Game 1: SWOSU 5, Ouachita 0
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board first in the top of the second inning when
Keanni Barron sacrificed bunted the ball down the third base line and was thrown out, but
Jessica Carmo scored. The Bulldogs added one more run on the board when
Dustie Pence had an RBI and Carmo scored.
SWOSU added to its lead in the top of the third when
Jordyn Wadley hit a single up the middle and
Hannah Franklin scored.
SWOSU was ahead 3-0 after three innings of play. SWOSU continued to play great defense and they scored more runs in the top of the fourth inning when
Breanna Simmons hit a two-run home run over the left field fence, making the score 5-0.
Each team kept playing defense and SWOSU got back on the winning track, winning the first 5-0 in the series.
SWOSU seven hits in the game. Simmons had two hits and two RBIs. Wadley had a hit and two RBIs.
Miranda Grover (4-4) pitched the entire way through and she pitched SWOSU's first shutout of the season and it was SWOSU's first shutout since 2019. She recorded three strikeouts and her defense gave up zero errors.
Game 2: Ouachita 5, SWOSU 4
SWOSU jumped on Ouachita early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Barron hit a double, scoring two runs and before this play, Franklin hit a double and Simmons scored.
Ouachita scored their first runs of the series in the bottom of the first inning and tied the game. SWOSU got out of the inning, by turning a double play and we were tied at three going into the second inning.
Ouachita had a chance to take their first lead of the series with the bases loaded in the bottom of the second, but the Lady Bulldogs got out the inning not giving up a run. Ouachita threatened with runners on second and third with two outs, but the Lady Bulldogs got the ground out, keeping the game tied at three going into the sixth inning. Ouachita scored a run-off a hit in the bottom of the sixth inning and took their first lead of the series. They were ahead of SWOSU 5-3 going into the top of the seventh.
With one out in the top of the seventh,
Ashtyn McAdoo laid down a perfect bunt and after a Ouachita error, she was safe and Pence advanced from first to third. Pence scored on a sacrifice fly ball hit by
Kenedi Morelock, but Ouachita won the game 5-4.
Morelock went 2-for-3 at the plate and had an RBI. Pence, Simmons, Wadley and Franklin each scored a run.
Alisa Friesen (2-6) pitched one inning and gave up two hits and three runs.
Brianna Cryer (0-1) came to relieve Friesen and she pitched the rest of the game. She recorded three strikeouts and gave up eight hits.
Game 3: Ouachita 3, SWOSU 2 (9 inn.)
SWOSU played great defense and did not allow a hit as Ouachita went three up three down in the first two innings of the game and the score was tied at 0 going into the top of the third.
SWOSU got on the board in the top of the third when Wadley hit a single and Pence scored a run, making it 1-0 going into the bottom of the third.
Grover had a perfect game going until the bottom of the fourth inning. Ouachita also scored two runs on back to back hits, making the score 2-1 going into the fifth inning. Grover got a strikeout to get out of the inning.
Franklin tied the game at two in the top of the sixth when she hit a home run over the left field fence. This was her fifth home run of the season and we were tied at two going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
Seven innings was not enough to decide this rubber match and this game went into extra innings.
Oucahita put a runner in scoring position, but SWOSU got out of the inning and it went into the ninth inning. SWOSU was held scoreless and Ouachita scored the game winning run off a throwing error from SWOSU. The ball was caught in right field and Ouachita scampered from third base off the overthrow. SWOSU has played in extra innings two other times this season, beating Southern Nazarene 8-9 last weekend, but falling to Oklahoma Baptist 6-5 earlier in March.
Franklin had a hit, scored a run and had an RBI. Wadley had a hit and an RBI. Grover (4-5) pitched the entire game and kept the Lady Bulldogs in the game early, as she had a perfect game going until the bottom of the fourth. However, she gave up five hits, but recorded four strikeouts.
