WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU Softball team played a hotly-contested three-game series with Henderson State over the weekend, with each game being decided by just one run. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, they were on the lower end of two of the games as the Reddies claimed the series 2-1.
SWOSU, now 7-12 (7-7 GAC) on the year, returns to action on Thursday-Friday, April 1-2, at East Central.
Game 1: Henderson State 7, SWOSU 6
Henderson State scored all seven of their runs in the third and fourth innings, building a lead large enough to sustain SWOSU's late push that included five runs in the final two innings. The Bulldogs got a pair of home runs from
Jewell Lee, including a two-run shot in the seventh that brought SWOSU to within one run. Lee would've had a three home run day had it not been for a runner being called out for leaving early on her shot in the bottom of the third inning.
Lee led the Dawgs with a 4-for-4 performance that included four RBI and two runs scored while
Hannah Franklin and
Jessica Carmo also had two hits apiece for SWOSU.
Miranda Grover (4-6) took the loss after allowing seven runs on 13 hits with four strikeouts in a complete-game effort.
Game 2: SWOSU 6, Henderson State 5
The Bulldogs scored three runs in the second inning and had the lead until the top of the seventh, when Henderson State scored three runs on four hits to take their first lead of the game at 5-4 heading into the bottom half of the inning. SWOSU put together a one-out rally in the final frame, led off by a double from
Breanna Simmons and capped by a two-run walk-off single by
Jessica Carmo that scored Simmons and
Jewell Lee for the tying and go-ahead runs as the Dawgs split the doubleheader.
SWOSU had 11 hits in the game, getting two apiece from Simmons, Lee,
Hannah Franklin and Carmo, with Jessica and
Dani Carmo having two RBI apiece for the Dawgs. Simmons scored twice for SWOSU while four other players each had one run.
Alisa Friesen (2-3) battled in the circle and allowed 10 hits and five runs before picking up her second win of the season.
Game 3: Henderson State 2, SWOSU 1
Each team scored a run in the first inning, but the game remained tied at 1-1 until the top of the seventh, when Henderson State got a two-out, RBI single into center that scored a runner from second for the go-ahead run. SWOSU would get a runner into scoring position in the bottom half of the inning, but a groundout ended the game with the tying run stranded on third base.
Breanna Simmons and
Jordyn Wadley had two hits apiece for the Dawgs, while
Hannah Franklin had the lone RBI off a fielders choice hit in the first inning.
Miranda Grover got the start and allowed one run on five hits in the first four innings before giving way to
Alisa Friesen (2-4), who took the loss after allowing one run on two hits in the final three frames.
