WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU Bulldogs Softball team dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader against the Washburn Ichabods on Tuesday afternoon at the SWOSU Athletic Complex.
SWOSU lost the first game 10-5 and lost the second game 8-4. SWOSU, now 5-6 on the year, returns to action this Friday-Saturday at Ouachita. Tuesday's losses also snapped SWOSU's five-game winning streak.
Game 1: Washburn 10, SWOSU 5
Washburn got on the board first, scoring off a home run in the top of the first inning and scored three runs in the top of the second to take a 4-0 lead.
SWOSU got on the board in the bottom of the second inning when Breanna Simmons hit a double into right field and Dustie Pence and Jessica Carmo each scored runs.
Washburn answered, scoring another single home run in the top of the third and would go onto take a commanding 10-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Lady Bulldogs scored some runs. They two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Hannah Franklin hit a two-run home run and Jewell Lee scored. Simmons hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth inning. SWOSU ran out of gas, but defended well down the stretch and snapped their five-game winning streak, losing 10-5.
Hannah Franklin went 3-for-3 at the plate and she scored a run and had two RBIs. Simmons had two hits and three RBIs.
Alisa Friesen (2-5) pitched two innings and had a strikeout while allowing four runs and five hits. Miranda Grover (3-4) came into the circle and pitched the rest of the way through.
Game 2: Washburn 8, SWOSU 4
Washburn struck first scoring a run just like in the first game, but not until the top of the second inning.
The Ichabods got the sticks going in the third and fourth innings and were ahead 7-0. SWOSU fired right back at Washburn, scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. SWOSU had four hits and they scored their runs on two singles and a sacrifice fly ball.
Washburn ran into some pitching trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning and Simmons scored from third base with the bases loaded. SWOSU trailed 7-4 going into the sixth inning. Washburn scored a run in the top of the seventh and SWOSU needed a four-run rally to force extra innings.
SWOSU could not rally and went 3 up 3 down and the Ichabods defeated SWOSU 8-4.
Jordyn Wadley went 2-for-3 at the plate, had an RBI and scored a run. Simmons went 2-for-4 from the plate and scored a run. Despite losing 8-4, SWOSU did have more hits than Washburn did as they had nine hits and Washburn had eight hits.
Brianna Cryer pitched four innings, recording two strikeouts while allowing seven hits. Friesen came in to relieve Cryer and she allowed one run.
