Softball Sweeps SNU, Extends Winning Streak to Five

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The SWOSU Lady Bulldogs softball team completed a three-game home Great American Conference series sweep against Southern Nazarene Sunday and Monday.
 
Two of the three games were decided by one run and the final game went into extra innings, but SWOSU prevailed and currently has a five-game winning streak. They played a single game Sunday and a doubleheader Monday.
 
SWOSU (5-6 5-3 GAC) returns to action, 1 p.m., Tuesday at home with a double header against Washburn.
 
Game 1: SWOSU 8, SNU 6
SWOSU scored the first run of the game when Dani Carmo singled to right field and Jewell Lee scored from this base.
 
SNU responded in the top of the second, scoring four runs, but the Lady Bulldogs fired right back, scoring six runs in the bottom of the second with a triple from Breanna Simmons, which scored two runs and a double from Hannah Franklin scoring two more runs.
 
The Lady Bulldogs scored one more run when Lee had a sacrifice RBI ground ball out, but Kenedi Morelock scored from third base, making the score 8-4 going into the top of the fourth.
 
SNU scored two runs in the top of the fourth, but SWOSU played stout defense, only giving up one hit in the final three innings and SWOSU won 8-6.
 
Miranda Grover (2-3) pitched the entire game and she recorded two strikeouts while giving up nine hits.
 
Game 2: SWOSU 11, SNU 10
Fueled by a massive eight-run sixth inning for SWOSU, the Lady Bulldogs snagged a close win.
 
Each team scored a run in the first inning, but SNU took a 3-1 lead in the second inning. SWOSU responded in the bottom of the third inning with a run with a sacrifice fly ball into left field from Franklin, but Morelock scored. SNU responded with a run in the top of the fourth and held a 4-2 advantage going into the fifth inning.
 
SNU faced the dreaded two outs before the big inning by SWOSU. SWOSU tallied eight hits with a triple, three doubles and four singles. SWOSU was ahead 10-4 going into the top of the seventh inning.
 
SNU rallied, scoring six runs and we were tied going into the bottom of the seventh. SWOSU scored the game winning run when Simmons hit a walk off double and Morelock scored.
 
Alisa Friesen (2-4) pitched in the circle for 6.1 innings, where she recorded a strikeout, but gave up 10 hits. Brianna Cryer (1-0) came in to relieve Friesen and she got the final outs for SWOSU.
 
Game 3: SWOSU 9, SNU 8 (8 inn.)
Like the previous games, these games were closely contested games, but SWOSU prevailed and found ways to win in the end.
 
SNU struck first, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. SWOSU battled back in the bottom of the second inning, scoring five runs and they scored a run in the bottom of the third inning, making the score 6-2 going into the fourth inning. SWOSU tallied four hits in the first and second innings.
 
SNU caused a storm, scoring a run in the top of the fourth and five runs in the top of the fifth inning. SWOSU scored a run, taking an 8-6 lead. SWOSU inched closer in the bottom of the fifth inning, making it 8-7 with a single from Morelock and Carmo scored. SWOSU needed a run to send the games to extra innings and got it, as Barron hit a triple and she scored off an error by SNU on the next at bat and we were going to extra innings.
 
Each team defended well, but SWOSU took advantage of some mistakes by SNU and Barron scored the game winning run from third base off a fielding error.
 
Cryer (2-0) pitched in the circle for 5.2 innings, recording two strikeouts, but eight hits. Grover (3-3) relieved Cryer and she recorded a strikeout and allowed three hits the rest of the way through.
