Bulldog Softball Drops a Pair on Opening Day

EDMOND, Okla. – SWOSU Softball opened the 2021 season on Thursday at the Edmond Regional Festival, dropping a pair of games against in-state MIAA opponents.

The Bulldogs return to action on Friday, closing out the tournament at #13 Oklahoma Christian.

Northeastern State 7, SWOSU 4

The Riverhawks scored three runs in the top of the first inning and never relinquished the lead, despite SWOSU striking for two runs in the second and fourth innings, the latter of which cut it to a one-run game at 5-4. NSU added two insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning to provide the final margin.

Jordan Collins and Breanna Simmons both drew bases-loaded walks in the second inning and Jordyn Wadley and Keanni Barron both had RBI doubles in the fourth. Wadley and Simmons had two hits apiece for the Dawgs, who had an 8-7 advantage in hits, but committed three errors which led to one unearned run for NSU.

Alisa Friesen (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on five hits while walking five and striking out one. Brianna Cryer and Miranda Grover combined to pitch the final three frames.

Central Oklahoma 7, SWOSU 0

A six-run second inning put UCO solidly in control and kept the Dawgs playing from behind for the rest of the game. SWOSU got four hits in the game, compared to eight for UCO but they were unable to push across a run. Miranda Grover had two hits to lead the way for SWOSU while Wadley and Kennedi Morelock each had one.

Grover (0-1) also pitched the entire game, allowing five earned runs on eight hits with one strikeout and one walk.
