WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Men's Basketball fell victim to a last second go-ahead layup by Southeastern and fell to the Savage Storm 77-76 on Thursday to spoil their conference home opener.
The Bulldogs led for over 29 minutes of the contest and saw themselves up 67-57 with 9:20 left to play before going cold from the field. SWOSU was plagued by an offensive cold spell that spanned from the 7:21 mark to the 2:13 mark in which the Dawgs could not get a basket to fall. Meanwhile, Southeastern continued to chip away at their deficit and put themselves within striking distance as the game got closer to the end.
A clutch Kamden Gipson three-point shot with 30 seconds to play acted like it was going to be enough after it put SWOSU ahead by four points, but a timely answer on the other end by Southeastern kept the game within a single possession. With the Dawgs leading by one with 17 seconds left, Gipson missed a 1-and-1 free throw, and the Savage Storm snagged the final lead of the game on the go-ahead layup.
SWOSU shot 43% from the field in the game, compared to Southeastern at 44%. Both teams matched up well on the stat sheet, but a major discrepancy ended up being the three-point ball. The Savage Storm connected on 16-of-36 (45%) compared to the Bulldogs 9-of-27 (33%).
Gipson finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Chris Braggs, Jr. totaled 15 points, Tanner Meraz tallied 11 and Ben Smith added 10.
Mark Berry ended a single point shy of a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds.
SWOSU will now take on another tough conference foe in Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday. Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 3pm inside the Pioneer Cellular Event Center.
