EDMOND, Okla. – Bulldog Softball played a pair of close, high-scoring games on Saturday, ending up just on the short end in each as they close out a winless weekend at the UCO/OC Tournament.
SWOSU returns to action next weekend in Wichita Falls, Texas at the Midwestern State Invitational, which will feature four games on February 14-15.
Colorado Mines 10, SWOSU 7
The Bulldogs scored the first two runs and pulled even at 5-all in the third, but Colorado Mines plated five runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to pull away for the victory. SWOSU again had an advantage of 13-9 in hits, but a pair of errors by the Dawgs allowed Mines to add five unearned runs in the contest.
Breanna Simmons led the way with a 4-for-4 performance at the dish while
Keanni Barron was 3-for-4 with three RBI.
Amanda Moreno,
Hannah Morris and
Allyson Gafford each added two hits as those five players combined for all 13 of the Bulldogs hits in the game.
Alisa Friesen started and pitched 2.0 innings for the Bulldogs while
Brianna Cryer (0-2) took the decision after allowing five runs on five hits in 4.0 innings of work.
Pittsburg State 15, SWOSU 13
The Gorillas scored in five-of-seven innings, including 11 combined runs over the final four frames as they overcame an early SWOSU lead. The Bulldogs were in a good position early, following a grand slam by
Hannah Franklin capped off a five-run first inning. PSU started their comeback with four runs in the top of the second before scoring three in the fourth to go on top.
Franklin came through again in the fifth with an RBI double before scoring on a fielder's choice hit from Barron to tie the game at 8-all.
Sierra Chapa then stepped to the plate and smacked a two-run double to left, which put the Bulldogs up 10-8 after five. Recording the final six outs proved to be difficult for SWOSU, however, as Pitt State scored seven runs over those two innings and secured the victory, even after the Dawgs scored three in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners in scoring position.
Moreno, Simmons, Franklin, Barron and
Tara Hibbler each had two hits in the game, with Simmons adding three RBI while Franklin had five. Three different pitchers were used by SWOSU, with Friesen (0-2) taking the decision after allowing 12 runs on eight hits while striking out seven in 5.0 innings of work.
