SWOSU Softball Splits Home Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – The home faithful were treated to SWOSU Softball at the Athletic Complex for the first time in 2020 on Friday and they saw the Bulldogs split a doubleheader with Arkansas-Monticello.

SWOSU (3-11, 2-4 GAC) and UAM will conclude their four-game Great American Conference series with a doubleheader beginning on Saturday at noon.

SWOSU 11, Arkansas-Monticello 3 (5 inn.)

The Bulldogs scored in all five innings, including four-run innings in the first and third innings as they pulled away to defeat UAM by run-rule in the series opener. Breanna Simmons hit a three-run home run as part of a four-run first inning and the Dawgs never looked back, packing on 11 runs on 13 hits over five innings, which included a walk-off groundout by Tara Hibbler in the bottom of the fifth.

Amanda Moreno was 4-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI while Hibbler was the only other player with a multi-hit game. Simmons had three RBI and seven other players had a hit for SWOSU in the win.

Miranda Grover started and lasted two innings in the circle before Alisa Friesen (2-3) closed out the game by allowing three hits with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings of action.

Arkansas-Monticello 9, SWOSU 0 (5 inn.)

UAM flipped the script in the second game, holding SWOSU to four hits while putting up runs in each of the final four innings to get their own run-rule victory.

Amanda Moreno again led SWOSU by going 2-for-2 at the plate while Hannah Franklin and Saige Vandiver also recorded hits. Miranda Grover (0-4) again started at pitcher and took the loss after allowing two runs on four hits in the first two innings.
