Bulldogs Draw with Northwestern in GAC Opener

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – SWOSU was closing in on a Great American Conference opening victory over Northwestern on Friday when the Rangers struck for a goal in the 89th minute, forcing overtime and eventually a 1-1 draw.

The game was balanced in all facets, with each team totaling 14 shots in the game while Northwestern had a 9-8 advantage in shots on goal. SWOSU struck first, getting on the board late in the first half when Alexis Fowler played a free kick past the Northwestern defense, allowing Tianna Watkins to beat the keeper to make it 1-0 in the 40th minute.

SWOSU's Kirstyn Dill made four saves in the second half, but Northwestern's final shot in regulation found the back of the net and tied the game with just over one minute to play, sending the Dawgs to overtime for the second straight Friday night. The Bulldogs got one shot on goal in each overtime period, but after 20 extra minutes the score remained 1-1 and the teams played to a draw.

SWOSU is now 3-3-1 on the year and they open conference play with a 0-0-1 record. Next up for the Dawgs is a trip to Ada next Wednesday to face East Central.
